Mikhail Karpytchev

Prague, May 26 - Jun 25, 2003

The one-month stay of Mikhail Karpytchev was a good opportunity for the Prague modellers to compare different numerical approaches to solving the problem of viscoelastic relaxation of the Earth with laterally variable viscosity. This topic is of crutial importance because it is especially the progress in the modelling techniques which is now necessary for a deep understanding of how the Earth responds to ice/water redistributions, either at present or during the quartenary glaciation cycles. Besides this activity, possible ways to model the deformations related to recent changes of ice in Antarctica were discussed. These deformations are measured by GPS methods with relatively high accuracy and their modelling could indicate the contemporary trends in melting the Antarctic glaciers.
