Excursions and workshops (Wednesday 24 June)

Geological field excursion (led by Pavlína Hasalová and Luc de Hoÿm de Marien): The coach, support van and private car will depart from the hotel at 8:30.

The excursion comprises four geological localities that illustrate the consolidation of the Bohemian Massif during the Variscan orogeny and its subsequent sedimentary cover deposited during the Cretaceous marine transgression.

The excursion includes several short walks, totalling no more than 3 km. Some of the localities are situated near steep cliffs; please be mindful of your own safety and that of other participants.

Good walking shoes are recommended. Long trousers are generally advisable for field trips, as they provide protection from vegetation and insects; however, the planned localities are relatively easy to access, so this should not be a major concern. Warm and sunny weather is expected, so please bring appropriate sun protection, such as sunscreen and a hat. Non-essential belongings may be left on the bus.

The programme will conclude with an opportunity to visit the town of Kutná Hora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (unguided sightseeing). Please note that the day will include more than two hours of bus travel. The return is expected in time for dinner and the Geodynamic World Builder workshop.

Participants may choose to skip the visit to Kutná Hora, return directly to the conference venue after the geological excursion, and attend the MAGEMin workshop. Return transportation for this option will be provided by the support van and the private car.

Excursion to the glassworks in Světlá nad Sázavou (led by Lucie Tajčmanová): The coach will depart from the hotel at 8:30. The journey to Světlá nad Sázavou takes approximately 45 minutes.

The visit to the Boma Glassworks will be organised in two groups of 12 participants. Each guided tour will last approximately one hour. While one group is touring the glassworks, the other will take a walk through the adjacent castle park; the groups will then switch activities.

NEW: The glassworks excursion is fully booked. Additional participants are nevertheless welcome to join the coach trip to Světlá nad Sázavou, enjoy a walk through the castle park and spend a pleasant couple of hours in the town before returning to the conference venue.

On the return journey, we will offer a short geological field excursion to a rock outcrop with the ruins of Oheb Castle near the conference venue. Participants who prefer not to join this excursion, or who wish to return earlier for the tennis tournament, may continue directly to the hotel. We expect to return to the conference venue between 12:00 and 12:30.

MAGEMin workshop (Riel et al. 2022, GitHub): Led by Boris Kaus, the workshop will take place at the conference venue from 16:00 to 18:00. There is no limit on the number of participants.

Participants should install the following software in advance: Visual Studio Code, the Julia extension for Visual Studio Code (available from the Extensions panel in the left sidebar), and a recent version of Julia. MAGEMinApp can then be installed using the Julia package manager:

julia> ]
pkg> add MAGEMinApp

If possible, participants are encouraged to complete the installation before attending the workshop.

Geodynamic World Builder workshop (Fraters et al. 2024, GitHub): Led by Menno Fraters, Michael Pons and Daniel Douglas, the workshop will take place at the conference venue from 19:00 to 20:30. There is no limit on the number of participants.

The workshop will start with a 30-minute introduction to Geodynamic World Builder, followed by a 1-hour practical session. To make the session smoother for everyone, we kindly invite you to try installing Geodynamic World Builder before the workshop. This is not mandatory, and we will still be able to help with installation issues during the workshop. However, if you manage to install it beforehand, we will be able to spend more time focusing on the practical exercises and examples. Installation instructions are available at gwb.readthedocs.io. Please do not worry if you encounter any difficulties. We can look at them together during the workshop.

Recreational activities (Wednesday 24 June)

Several recreational activities are available on Wednesday. Some are included in the conference fee, others are freely accessible, and additional activities are offered by the hotel for an extra fee.

Tennis tournament. The tennis tournament will take place between 12:00 and 16:00, after the return of the bus from the glassworks excursion, and is expected to finish before the start of the MAGEMin workshop. Eight participants are registered, and matches will be played on two courts. Participants should meet directly at the tennis courts. Rackets will be available on site. The tournament will be organised by Vojtěch Patočka.

Rowing on Lake Seč. Two three-person rowing boats have been reserved from 9:00 to 17:00. Two-hour slots are available for groups of up to six participants: 9:00–11:00, 11:00–13:00, 13:00–15:00 and 15:00–17:00. Participants should meet at the hotel reception 10 minutes before the start of their slot. Oars will be provided, and life jackets will be available upon request. Contact: Ladislav Hanyk.

Cycling. The hotel provides six mountain bikes, reserved for the entire day. Cycling activities are divided into morning and afternoon sessions. Participants should report to the hotel reception, where they will receive instructions on how to collect their bicycle and helmet. Contact: Ladislav Hanyk.

In addition to the mountain bikes, eight e-bikes are available for an extra fee.

Bowling. Bowling is available for most of Wednesday. Participants typically form groups of up to five players and reserve a lane for one hour. Contact: Ladislav Hanyk.

Swimming. Participants may choose between the indoor hotel swimming pool (12 × 5 m), the outdoor hotel swimming pool (20 × 8 m), and Lake Seč. The indoor hotel pool is available to hotel guests using their room card (90 minutes per day free of charge), while Lake Seč is freely accessible 24 hours a day.

Hiking. Hiking routes can be planned individually using Mapy.com (also accessible from our Venue page) or the companion Mapy.com mobile application. Popular options include: a walk to the ruins of Oheb Castle (2 km each way), a walk to the dam at Lake Seč (approximately 1 km beyond Oheb), and a full circuit around Lake Seč (approximately 15 km).

Other activities. For an additional fee, the hotel offers indoor and outdoor activities, including a shooting range, golf simulator, squash, climbing wall and beach volleyball.

Presentation guidelines

The scientific programme consists of keynote oral presentations and poster sessions.

Oral presentations are by invitation only and last about 45 minutes, including 10 minutes for questions.

All participants are invited to contribute to the poster sessions. Posters should be prepared in A0 portrait format. Please note that no poster-printing facilities will be available on site. Posters will be attached using adhesive putty provided by the organisers.

All early career scientists, except invited speakers, are required to give a one-minute flash presentation using a single slide to advertise their posters.

Abstract submission

Abstract submission is now closed. Registered participants have received an email invitation containing instructions for submitting abstracts via the submission system.

Registration

Registration for pre-registered participants was closed on February 15.

General registration is open from February 16 to 28. The registration password has been sent to all participants who contacted the organisers between February 2 and 15. The password will be further provided to interested participants upon request by email (alw.2026.cz (at) gmail.com).

Early career scientists (in line with the EGU definition) are invited to register via the registration page for early career researchers.

Senior researchers are invited to register via the registration page for senior researchers.

Registration fee and accommodation

Registration fee for early career scientists: 4,800 CZK (max. 80 ECS; poster presentation required)
Registration fee for senior researchers: 7,600 CZK (max. 43 SR)

The registration fee includes all meals, coffee breaks, a bus shuttle from Pardubice train station (on Sunday afternoon) and back (on Friday morning), access to conference rooms, and recreational activities on Wednesday afternoon. Early career scientists benefit from a reduced registration fee thanks to the support of EGU, Charles University, and the Czech Geological Survey.

Accommodation is provided in shared double rooms with private facilities. A limited number of single rooms is available on a first-come, first-served basis for senior researchers. The accommodation price (for 5 nights) depends on the room type and ranges from 5,470 CZK for a shared double room to 14,875 CZK for an apartment with single occupancy.
